A NEW EDITION IS NOW AVAILABLE!

Well Suited to the Colony - The story of the Lacemakers of Calais.

Well Suited to the Colony written by Gillian Kelly and originally published in 1997 is the story of the development of machine-made lace from early mesh on wooden frames to intricate patterned lace. Entwined with the machines was the lives of the lace workers who laboured in the workshops of Midlands England, then in Calais and their migration in 1848 to new lives in the Australian Colonies after the political, economic and social upheaval in France.

Since then, author Gillian Kelly has continued her research and has now released her book in digitised format revised with additions and corrections.

Family Research Starters

We have been preparing short "research starters" of the lacemaker passengers who arrived in the Australian Colonies in 1848 and later. In particular we have attached details of births, deaths and marriages in France and Belgium. Also included are known details of passengers after they arrived in Australia and of family members who did not make the journey.

These starters are available on the Family Pages in the LOC Families section of the website.

If you can add to the starters or provide corrections, please contact us.
